________________________________

Kathy Cooper- The Yogi, Teacher and Friend

I first heard of Kathy Cooper in 2008 from my good friend Jacob Handwerker. Jacob had the opportunity to work with Kathy for a 3 month “season” in Sri Lanka (where he had visited a year prior under a different teacher) and raved about her. Kathy had taken up the roll teaching ashtanga yoga at that center at the behest of Anthony (Gary) Lopadata, one of Tim Millers initial teachers. The prior teacher, Anthony “Prem” Carlissi had moved his teaching to Bali and Kathy comfortably took over his role without having much international teaching experience. Since then Kathy (with Jacob making a yearly appearance) has built up a solid Ashtanga Yoga destination with many people making it their first choice of schools. This is not easy to do when India is the first stop on the way to a grueling, round the clock trip, to southwest Sri Lanka. Knowing Kathy as I do now I can see why people are willing forgo yoga in India and make the trek to be with her.

At that time I was going through the turmoil of not having a direct teacher. For as important as I think it is to practice and learn what the practice has to offer, alone, some of what was coming up was beyond my ability to understand or move through. Much of the confusion was simply a disconnect between practitioner and lineage. I had been in India in 2007 but returned in worse shape than when I had left. It was not a matter of knowing the practice but rather what to do with what came up from doing it. If the yoga practice goes on for years and years, that which can be known at 2 years is quite different at 10 years. I was not interested in a peer teacher, informed by the same decade of work, frustration and revelation. I needed a guide with a lifetime of perspective.

“Who is Kathy Cooper” was the title of the 2009 and first Kathy Cooper workshop I hosted. I wrote that line partly to be cheeky but also because it was a good question. I did not know her and she was not famous (yet). At the time Kathy was well known in the Bay Area, but outside, not so much. When first I heard the list of her accomplishments I was blown away. Firstly, she had been practicing Ashtanga Yoga for over 30 years, with Guruji, Nancy Gilgoff, and David Williams to name a few ( there are many more). These folks (Kathy included) were the first Americans to make the journey to Mysore to be with Guruji in the early 70s, predating by 10 years or more, excellent, well known and revered teachers like Tim Miller and Richard Freeman. Why Kathy was not more well known was my biggest question but also the trigger for my insight to include her in our sangha.

The one accomplishment that truly inspired me and triggered the action to invite Kathy was her contiguous practice of the Ashtanga Yoga method for 30 plus years, as a woman. In a field dominated by athletic men, most of the women teachers are either unknown or have moved to other methods. Not Kathy. She has quietly stuck it out and by all appearances is just beginning to show in the field of what we are now able to call, “Master Teachers” in the Ashtanga lineage. I was thrilled to discover that a relatively unknown, female, Master Teacher existed. One who sat at the window of opportunity required to visit a small, unknown, yoga community and fill what I believed to be a gigantic gap in my personal teaching and practice, and the practices of the people I was trying to serve. I knew I could not speak with authority regarding ashtanga yoga for women nor what happens after the 15 year mark and beyond. While a yoga mechanic, or a sutra reciter and philosopher are great resources, a wise knower of “yoga over time” is hard to come by, especially when the practice is often regarded as simply a physical expression. I wanted more than that for myself so I made it my personal quest to get her in front of the Near East Yoga community.

More than anything I wanted to impress Kathy by showing her a perfect visit to Portland. In a way it was my chance to show a genuine teacher the simple power of a strong community practicing under the banner of a strong lineage. I also wanted to test my actions and accomplishments against the views of lineage holder to see if they stood up. We had only two phone conversations about her first visit, a testament to her easy going nature and acceptance of my idea for what I and Near East needed in a workshop. That year Kathy hosted 6 days of Mysore classes (not done in the traditional workshop method) and offered a follow-up workshop on the last weekend. The next year she came for a month of Mysore. Last year she came twice. My objective was to find a teacher for Near East Yoga that would be open and supportive in both places of weakness and strength. Kathy has an ability to quickly and respectfully engage any yogi where they are as they are. Within a few minutes of knowing her, and getting a quick tip that might be just the thing we need, it’s easy to let her in. So, there is no fear or anxiety of performance or qualification with her. Overall I can say that the Near East Yoga community has embraced Kathy as a guide and teacher. She knows her stuff and dispenses it deftly.

When Kathy is here she takes the time to connect with people and share her insight and wisdom in a way that truly considers the person. Each time she has visited, her kind words of encouragement that I took to heart and acted upon, have helped me grow in all the ways I needed to back when we first met. It’s that sort of relationship that she is most well suited for- the long term one that has a chance to grow and be cultivated. One that works both ways. It seems like Ashtanga Yoga has been for her, as it should be for any yogi, a vehicle to support and deliver, to the open and courageous, a most subtle and profound medicine that might be summed up as a dose of being open to life as it is, loving ourselves and loving people. I have written many lines about the virtue of Kathy Copper. When I look back on them I can see how I have changed simply by the way I choose to relate her. The sentiment is still there but I am no longer speaking about someone I only just met. Now we are friends with a solid history. I can’t say how I knew that I would be right about her before we had ever met. But I was and I love being right. And I love Kathy. In hind sight it was Kathy’s energy preceding her that informed me of her qualities. I can only claim to have been open to her and ready for a change. The rest is hers.

The results of this immersion will be the ability to safely remember and practice the method “by heart” on your own, or with direct supervision by a qualified instructor.

Ashtanga Yoga or ashto (meaning eight) and anga (meaning arm or limb) was named by the late Sri K Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, South India. The Sanskrit term is derived from the ancient yoga text, “Patanjali Yoga Sutra” and denotes a path of Eight simultaneous actions taken by the aspirant desiring the fruits of yoga practice.

Mysore, South India is both the name of the location of the origin of the style and the method in which the style is practiced. The lineage dates back five generations and is first signified by “silent practice” of a sequence of postures linked together by inhaling and exhaling. The objective of the yogi is to practice the method with some regularity over a long period of time, thereby obtaining results.

A common block in developing a long lasting, self-practice is freeing the time and space to learn and apply the basics. In this setting, accompanied by other peers, the pressure is off to perform, and the chance at getting the practice down for yourself is on.

Each session will include progressive instruction of the practice and a discussion detailing the history of the lineage, benefits of practice, alignment and proper use of the body, essential Sanskrit jargon and key points on how to recall and remember the process.

The immersion will bean joyful hearted and informative opportunity open to anyone with a desire to practice. Thanks, Casey

What’s Next for Near East Yoga

I’m currently organizing an Ashtanga Yoga Immersion beginning March 31st at 11:30AM and end on Saturday May 19th. The meeting times are Monday and Wednesday, 730-9PM (note that note the times are later in the evening). The immersion cost will $165 dollars, meet 17 times. It will also include access to some of the Mysore class times. It’s for folks both new to ashtanga and new to yoga. The Saturday sessions will especially focus on basic 8-Limb yoga philosophy and establishing a practice that can last. The intended result of this immersion is to practice yoga in the Mysore style, but not geared for perfection which we all know takes time and begs the question; is it ever really perfect, is it ever not perfect? Having the time and opportunity to understand the method and remembering the process is crucial to lasting practice. I believe a lot of people want this but find the method of learning it outside a beginning group structure difficult.

Official fliers for the event will be sent out next week. For now I’m asking you all to spread the word to that one friend who has always threatened to practice but can’t make it. Now is as good a time as any to do the preliminary work that can lead to a lasting practice.

* Some notes regarding Mysore practice-

I’m officially inspired.

After years of chronic pain in my back I’m finally on the mend. I’m not pain free but I don’t expect that to be possible anyway, just free of the cause and abiding in the result. Day in and day out for the past 4 years, since Bush was president, the year 2012 just a concept and the economy had yet to collapse, I have been constantly working on healing my back (which is connected to everything it seems). I tried everything under the sun to get it feeling right again. I practiced day in day out, studied day in day out, contemplated day in day out. I did the wrong things and the right things. I got deeper into yoga that I ever would have had I simply been endowed with pain free life. I saw so much, tried so much and gained an entirely new respect for a healthy body that can last. I would not trade it in to loose what results I have acquired. Nor can I. And I suppose there is more to come of pain and comfort anyway.

In light of the recent buzz about yoga wrecking your body (which has passed and been forgot, like every thing else that ever gets acted out or uttered and commented on so eloquently) I have to thank my pain (via an injury) for teaching so much about yoga. Not only did it teach me a lot about yoga, it taught me a lot about healing and living. Without my nasty, daily, sometimes bitter (and sometimes in false remission) and always exhausting relationship with excruciating back pain, I would never have healed or at least confirmed that to heal is possible. A strange paradox for sure.

Back pain been my constant companion and teacher since I was last in India (2007) (and before really) and the best teacher I’ve ever had. I know it sounds strange but it takes what it takes. So I’ll be blunt for all those folks who think yoga is only supposed to be a fun ride where suffering never happens and everything has to be peachy for yoga to be ok. Our bodies will ultimately betray us and if we don’t get into who we really are (self-reflecting awareness) we will struggle to achieve getting a better one, which in death translates as reincarnation, for better or worse. I don’t think anyone living authentically believes yoga to be only fun etc anyway… On the contrary, if we get on a mat or a cushion and something pleasant or unpleasant does not arise we can’t really call it yoga and we are either blinded, in delusion or fooling ourselves. Because something will always be coming up. Unpleasant, pleasant. Not relevant. Embracing the origin of those states in what yoga is for, not the endless pursuit of one or the endurance of the other. We look within the pleasant and unpleasant to know from where they arise. I wont try to explain this now. I know what I mean. You may as well.

In 2007 I was ready to have any shaman wave chicken feather over me or have an accidental chiropractic incident that put it all right. I was still ready last week. Those things never happened nor would they have worked. In light of my personality, which is how I got myself in the mess in the first place, I had to do the work and get myself right. No other person in the world can do this for me but me. Some people help made it worse because I wanted to let them try to for me what I needed to do for myself. A few helped me a great deal to make it better, taught me a great deal and offered me method and process that helped me acquire insight. With their personal work and living example of tirelessly carrying on, no matter what, my relentless struggle was reflected back at me as something valid and true and worth pursuing. They did not try to talk me out of anything and supported me in finding my own path among the many paths.

The reason I’m writing this? I want to encourage you to practice while I am in San Diego and keep the method up whether you have help or not. I want to support and encourage those of you who are set on making it work for yourself. To invite you do the method that stirs up then forces the poison out and gives rise to the remainder, knowledge of subtle awareness, pure awareness . Near East Yoga is going on it’s 10th year and for all that time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it’s been open for people to practice Ashtanga Yoga Vinyasa. That said, the mat, the cushion the street corner, yoga studio, Safeway etc… where the awareness of mind is concerned, there is no difference. Why wait to practice tomorrow when we can practice now. Workshops are great, teachers are great but what about knowing our state of being is arising from within? Is that not our endowment? Self originating awareness? “Do your practice all is coming” are the Jois “words” (a nod to Game of Thrones) but they could just as well be “Do your practice because there is nothing else to do but practice”. If you have a practice, then keep it up. The only thing that stops people from practice is they stop practicing.

All of that said, I’m off to get support and insight from some Senior teachers. Three months ago I when I paid the money to do this conference I was not convinced it was for me. Some trusted friends said they wanted me there with them and I needed that support so I signed up. I certainly did not want to go to the conference with my practice as it was. Since I was going all the same, I had better get down to it and prepare. I had two big things to work out. One was the afore mentioned back-pain. The other, my gigantic ego and the effect it was having on my practice. Ego is one of the klesha’s. Klesha means pain. Ego is pain. One day it dawned on me that ego-pain is basically summed up like this- my Ego calls me on the phone, then deceives me about me and others by making it about Ego with the result being pain. That’s how I know my Ego has called me up- I hurt. What the past four years have taught me is how to hang up the phone. My objective is to put that karma behind me. Patanjali has pointed all of this out in the Sutras. It’s up to me to do it.

And in San Diego, the Sun is shining. Ah, the Sun. I’ll gladly bow to that teacher anytime.

Looking forward to seeing friends there and friends here when I return.

Peace to you all, Casey

Hello!

Tuesday February 7th is the Full Moon and Near East Yoga will be closed.

Sunday, February 12th, 5-7PM, is the next meeting of the Yoga Sutra Discussion. My objective is to briefly review a few concepts we have covered then move into sutras 1.12 and 1.13.
I also want people to share some examples of how this info is working out for people in daily life. As the meetings progress I’d like to see them become more of a “philosophical potluck”. So keep that in mind and bring us an anecdote to share.

****This section deals directly with mat storage issues- please read*****

Many of you keep your mat at Near East Yoga- with Ashtanga Yoga being a daily
practice it’s better to not travel with them and I don’t mind storing them. If you are there most days
please continue to store your mat in the place provided. Here are a few guideline to consider.

Please store your mat and rug separately. Folded rugs can be placed on the top and adjacent shelf.
Placing your mat in a bag helps to keep it from unrolling on the shelf and helps you find it.
Write you name on your mat so I know they have an owner.
Taking a moment to roll your mat and storing it properly leaves room for more mats.

Last word on mats-

****If your mat is at Near East Yoga and you are not, your mat will get gifted to a fellow yogi, donated to charity or become a house mat****

Call, Email or text if you think you have abandoned a mat and want it back.- Soon.

Thanks Casey

Hello Friends,

Following the Friday 7AM group primary I have been chanting and offering basic ngondro practice at 9AM. A few of you have learned it and can practice. Folks new to the rpactice are encouraged to join in if you have the chance. I offer what insights I have but know well that the practice is the real teacher. It’s a very portable practice once it gets established, you can engange it all day long with great result. Like many things that can only be known by their fruit, insights about ngondro can only come from practice of ngondro, which is a root teaching of Vajrayana Buddhism and essential to the Dzogchen view . With fruit like that the root is especially impressive. The words Vajrayana and Dzogchen might be unfamiliar but be assured that what they represent succinctly corroborates the Patanajli Yoga Sutra logic, practice and result.

Dennis, who taught ngondro to me, after learning it and practicing it with his teachers for many years, will be joining in this Friday. His presence offers a great opportunity to me and others wishing to gain insight into this wonderful practice. For about a year I have been working up a group to have such a meeting so please feel welcome to attend.

I linked to a few pages, the people I received the teachings from. Keith Dowman and Kenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche. I cant be more excited to share this with you and will continue to do so as long as I can.

Like I said you will need the root to get the fruit. Often the fruit and the seed are one in taste so much insight can be gained by simply hearing, reading or reciting the words. We can really only know for ourselves if root is vital and the fruit is there.

Here’s what’s going on for the Yoga Sutra Discussion-

Sunday the 29th at 5PM- A Concise Exploration of Samkhya and Pancha Mahabhuta- Part 1

I gave a major piece of my early study time to Samkhya and Pancha Mahabhuta theory many years back and it gave me a major piece of insight which has supported my continuing study since. With Samkhya study, via the works of Kapila, combined with the work of Rama Prasad in his 1898 text titled Natures Finer Forces I have been supported by original logic and reason in my personal quest to understand Yoga Science and practice.

What I have planned for Sunday will be a combination of these two fields and how they supported the development of Yoga Sutra logic and practice. For instance, Samkhya is the foundation theory from which Patanjali Yoga Sutra is derived and both are included in the six major darshans (philosophical views) of Indian Classical thought. Samkhya is also the framework for the logic and practice of Ayurveda, the ancient healing science of India. In combination I will work in how Rama Prasad outlines the Pancha Mahabhutas or the five great emanations which correspond dirrectly to Samkhya and Yoga Sutra. Specifically Rama Prasad explains the origin and sustenance of Chitta which is especially useful for our understanding of Yoga Sutra. If you are like me and need to obtain the raw elements of the philosophy and construct a personal view and understanding then connecting with this info is for you.

I think coming to this particular discussion will be instrumental in bringing light to the ones which follow. Please consider attending- even if you have heard it all before. I always remember that Einstein “imagined” the Theory of Relativity before doing the math and proving it. Samkhya and Pancha Mahabhuta speak directly to that quality of our nature that bring our chitta to bare on the imagined reality- the Sanskrit word bhavana appropriately comes to mind.

Again, please click on the links if you want to read up on any of the teachings and ideas before hand.

Peace and see you at yoga, Casey

Sunday, January 8th 2012 is the full moon. Near East Yoga will be closed for morning yoga practice.

The Yoga Sutra Study group will meet at 5-7PM. Please take a look over the first 11 sutras of the first pada prior to the meeting.

If you have not come to the prior meetings that’s fine- we are moving slowly and you will be quickly brought up to speed.

Everyone who came to the 2nd meeting was given a hand-out of the yoga sutra with devanagri and roman transliteration.
Be sure to bring that. If not I have more. We will be adding definitions to some of the sanskrit words.

If you came to the 1st meeting you were given a “ritual object”- please bring it or bring one of your choosing.
If you don’t have one that’s OK too. We will be doing a fun exercise where we play around with getting to know and understand what
“modifying” (vritti) the mind (chitta) looks like so we can recognize it for ourselves.

See you Sunday and before. Casey

PS- The Friday group primary at 7AM gets a good sized group- if you like that sort of energy, please join in.

Hello Friends and Happy New Year!

New Years Day yoga is “unsupported” practice at 10AM- after, at Noon I’d like to meet at Peet’s on 15th and Broadway to celebrate the New Year!
Let me know if you need more info-

Posted her is the “Official” version of the 2012 Near East Yoga schedule including 2012 moon days.
The moon days are determined by the moon rise in Portland, Oregon. This is also precisely corroborated by the iCal app for Mac. Keep in mind that these dates might be different from your home calender but true to Portland.

The new schedule also reflects the best times for folks not familiar with our community to engage the studio when support is available. I note it as being “Official” because the unofficial times require a certain effort to engage
in which the uninitiated find confusing and possibly daunting.

The times have not abruptly shifted from what you are accustomed but do reflect the “spaces” when I get my practice in and the studio gets cleaned. For those that need it, the studio is always open for practice during times not posted.

Following this email are my observations and reflections on 2011 and ideas for 2012 at Near East Yoga- Thanks for a great year!

Casey

___________________________________________________________________

PS- New Years Reflection

After failing to keep my words to a few lines and discarding two long winded drafts I will keep it to a few things-

Thanks Guruji, I think of you everyday.

Thanks Dennis, Kathy for the life of works and teachings you have shared with me and the community at Near East Yoga.

Thanks Sarahji and Dena for supporting me and the Near East Yoga Community. You service is wanted, needed and appreciated.

Thanks to all the good people who “authorize” me with your presence. I’d be a lesser person without your acceptance of my service.

I’m excited to be practicing, learning and sharing the yoga. My hope is you are as well.

I’m looking forward to the sutra study group, having Kathy visit in May, Keith Dowman in June and Narasimhan and Jayashri in July.

I’m inspired by all the young folks (babies too!) and old folks getting into ashtanga yoga. May Near East Yoga continue to support all degrees of yoga practice.

May each of you deepen and grow your practice and may it reveal something new and revolutionary.

May your joy increase and your sorrows decrease.

May your work in yoga bring benefit to all beings.

Peace in 2012.
